Useless Media Musings

Some things I discovered this week, by surfing the channels, and surfing the web:

  • While Minnie Driver may not have completely mastered her American accent, she and Eddie Izzard are absolutely terrific in their new FX series, The Riches.  I love that it’s different from nearly anything I’ve seen on TV before, although I suppose if I were to describe it to someone, I might say it’s sort of a cross between the HBO series Big Love and the movie The Grifters… with a little bit of Lost In America thrown in for good measure. If you like snappy writing and complex characters in unique situations, I think you’ll enjoy it. Darkly funny, eccentrically dramatic.
  • Priscilla Presley looks freaky. Why do beautiful women have to surgically tinker so much with themselves, when there’s absolutely nothing wrong with how they look? I’m not a fan of plastic surgery in general, but if you’ve got a face like a Picasso painting, I can understand your decision to make yourself look more like everyone else. However, it makes me sad when I see someone go from naturally gorgeous to synthetic and grotesque. Because once you’ve done it, you can never go back. And 99% of the time, everybody can tell you’ve gone under the knife.
  • And here’s a handy set of guidelines for movie-goers everywhere:
