My Choices For This Year’s SAG Awards

Just finished voting in the SAG Awards. Nominated films (and, to a lesser degree, television shows) were really all over the map this year. At least one of the movies was just bad, bad, bad. Another was a very ugly piece of cinema that I hope never to see again. Some of the nominated performers phoned it in, while other performances were laughable (and not in a good way).

But there were a few gems. Here are the people who got my votes… Continue reading

Boondoggle Maneuver

Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol — yeah, it’s a weird name for a sequel. Besides having too many colons, it looks like somebody just opened up a thesaurus and randomly coupled some unrelated words together. Can you imagine? Wow, that would be really idiotic for somebody to do! Ahem. But the nomenclature actually follows a top-secret naming formula, one that will apparently be used in all upcoming sequels of this title. Luckily for you, I have obtained this cryptic algorithm via unnamed channels — and after running it simultaneously for the past 72 hours on seventeen desktop computers each employing the latest version of a 64-bit Linux operating system, I am now prepared to share with you my…

One Stake, Well Done

Just caught the movie Stake Land — a zombie-inspired movie that’s not about zombies, but vampires. However, it’s different than any zombie OR vampire movie I’ve seen. Definitely has an “indie” feel to it. Would recommend it to fans of either horror genre, or just to independent film fans who are curious about seeing a thoughtful film about such a scenario, which is still full of great action scenes that you would expect and want from such a film.

Loved that its writer was the star, that the producer also appeared in it, and that most of the cast were unknowns. Hooray for independent film!

Kerflooey

Back online after my DSL router decided to go kerflooey yesterday — and now everything is back to normal again today, which is just as perplexing.

Realized how hooked in many of us are to the Internet, and how our culture would have a pretty rough time adjusting if we suddenly lost it. Me, I receive and reply to auditions and gigs via cyberspace, not to mention online banking, shopping, connecting with family & friends, and of course all the entertainment that I wouldn’t have access to otherwise.

I joked that I might actually have to interact with people face to face! But the Internet has become so ingrained in our daily lives, how do you think you’d cope if one day it just wasn’t there?

Cold is relative

HOW I CAN TELL IT’S WINTER IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: Have to turn on space heater in the evening to take the edge off; can no longer sleep with windows open all night.

HOW I USED TO BE ABLE TO TELL IT WAS WINTER WHEN I LIVED IN WISCONSIN: Icicles finally large enough to use in snowmobile jousting matches.

Zombie Apocalypse Hits Wisconsin!

A little over two years ago, just before Halloween, a buddy of mine (@DacBeerpig) began a Twitter experiment. It was an idea loosely inspired by Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds radio play, except this time involving not aliens, but zombies.

He created several Twitter accounts, each starting out with the normal sort of posts you’d expect to see from your average Twitter user. Then all hell broke loose, as an undead contagion started sweeping through the area. Continue reading

Everybody Stumbles…

…it’s human to get distracted, and stumble, as we travel on our path.

Or, sometimes we see something off to the side that looks enticing, and we wander away from the path for a while.

So it’s not about whether or not we will wander, or stumble — because we will — it is knowing that we have the strength inside us to hoist ourselves back up on our two feet, to consult our inner compass so that we can locate the path again… and continue on. Continue reading

The “True Blood” Drinking Game

Dammit, Sookie!

For some reason, this show seems tailor-made for a drinking game. Perhaps because both the show and drinking games carry equal amounts of fun and danger. Continue reading

“It Just Fell Into My Lap”

Creating Serendipity

Getting what you want from life…

It doesn’t involve thinking harder…

or working harder…

or knowing all the right people.

In fact, it’s far simpler than we were all brought up to believe. Continue reading
